Mark 6:30-44, 8:1-10

Jesus gives his disciples a challenging task

As we go through Alpha for the next seven weeks, instead of listing small group discussion questions, we will have daily reflections and prayer points for each week.

Monday
Reflect on Jesus’ miracles of feeding thousands. What do you hunger for in your life? How can Jesus meet your needs?
Pray that you might experience God’s miraculous provision in your life.

Tuesday
Imagine yourself as a reproducing leader (meaning: a leader who continues to produce other leaders). What might it take to get you there?
Pray that God might help you begin to see the path forward; also for Damon’s small group that begins Alpha tonight.

Wednesday
What don’t you know (experience, not necessarily head-knowledge) about God?
Pray for opportunities to know more.

Thursday
In what ways have you been sent by Jesus to do his work? How do you rely on him in that process?
Pray for Elaine and Iggy’s small group as they begin Alpha tonight.

Friday
How is God calling you to move forward in your journey towards becoming a reproducing leader?
Pray to God, asking him to give you and image or idea of a practical way you can begin; also pray for Josh and Rachel’s small group beginning Alpha tonight.

1. What were the decisions and choices in this passage? What choices do we make that affect the lives of others?
2. What are some alternative choices that could have been made that would have altered the consequences?
3. Ultimately, John the Baptist’s choice to call out Herod and Herodias led to his death, but he was still willing to stand for truth. What is the cost to us of sharing the Gospel to others?

take it home:

1. What is your attitude towards serving in others in a way that requires personal sacrifices?
2. The path to obedience is not always easy, in fact it can be quite costly. To say “yes” to God could very well mean to say “no” to what you want. How does this appear to our culture? How could this be desirable for Christians?
3. How are you being like John the Baptist in your life–preparing the way for Jesus to come into the lives of your friends and family?

points to process:

1. What might Jesus have been feeling when the people from his hometown took offense to him (v.3)?
2. Why could Jesus not do any mighty works in his hometown, other than a few healings (v.6)?

take it home:

1. How do you respond to rejection? How have you responded to rejection in the past?
2. Do you consider yourself part of Jesus’ family? What do you think it means to be God’s child?
3. What are ways that you reject Jesus as you go about your life?
4. Are you willing to move from unbelief to belief and trust that Jesus can do mighty works in your life? Pray that this would happen.

Mark 5:21-43

1. What are some similarities and some contrasts in the two encounters Jesus has in this passage?
2. How do you think Jairus might have felt in v.30 when Jesus turned to look for the person who touched him? How about in v.35?

1. Do you think this world is misleading us into not believing in God but being afraid of lots of things?
2. Do you have something you are afraid of? Can you share with us what that is?
3. What have your learned from these two miracles about belief and fear? What has Jesus told you today?
4. In what area of your life might Jesus be saying “talitha cum”—“get up!” and go from death into life?
